Joint Statement from Matt Bishop MP and Catherine Fookes MP Regarding Upcoming Weight Restrictions on the M48 Severn Bridge:
“Yesterday, we were informed that a 7.5 tonne weight limit will be introduced on the M48 Severn Bridge. This means that heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and other vehicles over 7.5 tonnes will no longer be able to use the M48 Severn Bridge and will instead be diverted to the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.
This decision has been made by National Highways following routine survey work which identified corrosion to the main cable. While the bridge remains safe for general use, the restriction is necessary to prevent further deterioration and to avoid a potential full closure in the future.
We understand this change will impact local businesses and may affect delivery routes.
National Highways has told us that around 10% of vehicles using the bridge are over the weight limit and that most of these have destinations within 50 kilometres of the bridge – highlighting the impact of this closure.
They have also assured us that buses, coaches, and emergency service vehicles such as fire engines will still be able to cross as normal.
We have both met with National Highways to be briefed on the new weight limit and expressed the need for as much support as possible for affected businesses.
If you are a local resident or business who may be affected by this change, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our offices.
We want to ensure your voice is heard throughout this process, and we will do everything we can to support you.”
