UPDATE: Old Wye Bridge in Tutshill/Chepstow

It was good to meet with both Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire County Council recently to discuss the current repairs of the Old Wye Bridge in Tutshill/Chepstow. I know many of you are waiting for an update as to when we can expect the bridge to reopen to motorists, as it has been to pedestrians.

I raised these questions with both local authorities, and I have been informed that they are currently undertaking further detailed monitoring of the Old Wye Bridge to assess what solutions could address the current fractures of the structure, which have meant it has had to close.

We do not yet know the result of the report, but I will continue to keep in regular contact with both local authorities on the progress of this assessment so I can update you all.

Both local authorities have made me aware that possible funding applications to government will be looked into once we are aware of the extent and cost of the repairs. As transport is a devolved matter in Wales, and due to the cross-border nature of this issue, each local authority may have a different process. That being said, I will make sure to express my support for these applications where I am able to and if they are made.

I know that with recent hot weather, the bridge has also needed to be closed to pedestrians as temperatures rise above 30 degrees. Please do check on hot days if pedestrian access is maintained or not.
