Protecting Children and Mothers from Abuse

A huge step forward in protecting children and mothers from abuse.

This morning, I stood outside Parliament with fellow MPs who have campaigned tirelessly to protect vulnerable children, and I am proud see the government listen to the brave voices of victims who have come forward to make this vital change happen.

We joined members of the public who have been instrumental in championing important changes to the Victims and Courts Bill.

Under the new amendments, anyone convicted of a serious sexual offence against a child—including offences resulting in conception—will automatically lose parental responsibility. This means a parent will no longer take active steps in their child’s life, including making decisions over their schooling, medical care or trips abroad. Families no longer need to apply to the family court to enforce this.

Every child deserves to grow up safe and protected. These reforms ensure we are safeguarding the most vulnerable in our society.

I will continue doing my part to ensure children across the country are protected.
