Martyn's Law receives Royal Assent

Yesterday marked a significant moment in strengthening public safety as Martyn’s Law received Royal Assent, officially becoming law. This landmark piece of anti-terror legislation ensures that venues across the country take necessary steps to better protect the public from terrorism. I am proud to have been part of the committee for the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, which brings in these new measures.

This law is named in memory of Martyn Hett, one of the 22 people tragically killed in the Manchester Arena attack in May 2017. His mother, Figen Murray, has been the driving force behind this campaign, working tirelessly to ensure that no other family has to endure the same heartbreak.

Under the new legislation, venues with a capacity of 200 or more will now be required to have a clear and practical plan in place to respond to potential terrorist incidents. This is a crucial step ensuring that venues across the country have clear, practical measures in place to protect people.
