Tackling Child Poverty with Labour's Plan for Change

ree

Yesterday, I met with Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson to discuss the recent announcement that, starting in September 2026, every child in a household receiving Universal Credit will be eligible for free school meals—including over 4,000 school-aged children in the Forest of Dean.

Labour is committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed by supporting families, easing financial pressures, and making sure children are well-nourished and ready to learn.

As someone who has worked in a school, I understand first-hand how important this policy will be for children’s well-being and success. This is our Labour Government at its best—investing in young people and tackling child poverty.
