STATEMENT: Suspension of Home Births

I know many of you are rightly concerned that Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has now taken the decision to suspend home births for at least six months.

Over the past two weeks, the Trust has carried out a thorough review and risk assessment of the home birth service, and it has concluded that the suspension needs to be extended.

I am extremely disappointed that this decision has been made and fully recognise the upset, disappointment, and worry that many of you will be feeling upon hearing this news.

It is incredibly important that women and families have the choice to give birth in the way that feels right for them, and I will be pushing for the Trust to ensure that restoring this choice is a priority.

I have seen first-hand, and through conversations and meetings with maternity staff at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, just how hard they work to provide safe and compassionate care to women and families across Gloucestershire. It is vital that they receive the support they need so that safety can always be prioritised.

I am committed to supporting all families in the Forest of Dean; ensuring your voices are heard in how you choose to welcome your children into the world.

I will continue urging the Trust to resolve these issues at pace and reinstate home births for my constituents without delay.
