LGR: UPDATE

I am pleased to hear today's announcement that local government reorganisation in Gloucestershire has been postponed, a decision I believe is the right one for the Forest of Dean.

Following legal advice, the government has decided to postpone reorganisation in Gloucestershire, among other areas, to ensure plans are robust, compliant with the law, and aligned with this Government's priorities.

Though I support devolution and bringing power back into the hands of local people, I have had longstanding concerns about the proposed reorganisation into unitary authorities in Gloucestershire, particularly the chosen model. I have repeatedly raised concerns with leaders that the proposals did not sufficiently reflect local circumstances or provide confidence that residents would be better served.

I therefore welcome the decision to pause the process and the commitment to review local government reorganisation. I look forward to working with leaders, both nationally and locally, to ensure the best possible outcome for the Forest of Dean.

I know many residents will want reassurance about what happens next. One of my key priorities in discussions with the Department has been protecting local democratic representation, and I have been assured that local elections will still take place next year, giving people across the Forest of Dean the opportunity to choose who represents them in the usual way.
