Gloucestershire DIY Waste Disposal Charges

Gloucestershire County Council has announced changes to the way DIY waste is disposed of at Household Recycling Centres, with new charges being introduced for waste that exceeds the free allowance.


I have written to GCC myself and received a response. Please see that letter below.


I know this will frustrate and worry many of you, so I have created a survey to hear your views and understand exactly how these new charges will impact you.


In summary, GCC have confirmed:


  • GCC say that small amounts of DIY waste under the allowance will still be free.


  • They also say charges would only apply if you: A) Go over the free allowance, or B) Exceed the permitted number of visits within a 4-week period.


  •  GCC says the proposal is based on financial modelling and evidence from other councils.


  • The council says operating costs and potential impacts have been considered.


  • They have said that Fly-tipping will be monitored.


  • Officers are looking into whether there can be more flexibility in how residents use their allowance.


  •  GCC argues the charges remain cheaper than hiring a skip or paying for commercial waste collection.


  • The council says the proposal is being driven by budget pressures and the need to raise income rather than cut services.
